The Battle of Life A Love Story is a novella by Charles Dickens, 1st published in 1846. It's the 4th of his five "Christmas Books", coming after The Cricket on the Hearth, followed by The Haunted Man & the Ghost's Bargain. The setting is an English village that stands on the site of a historic battle. Some characters refer to the battle as a metaphor for the struggles of life, hence the title. Battle is the only one of the five Christmas Books that has no supernatural or explicitly religious elements. (One scene takes place at Christmas time, but it isn't the final scene.) The story bears some resemblance to The Cricket on the Hearth in two aspects it has a non-urban setting & it's resolved with a romantic twist. It's even less of a social novel than is Cricket. As is typical with Dickens, the ending is a happy one. It's one of Dickens' lesser-known works & has never attained any high level of popularity, a trait it shares among the Christmas Books with The Haunted Man.

A beautifully written simple story about love . I found myself reading many sentences a second time because they so perfectly portrayed a scene or an emotionProduct details

The Battle of Life Charles Dickens 9781542496278 Books Reviews
Dickens' observations and descriptions of life's many varied situations are inspiring and thought-provoking. It doesn't matter that he lived in the 1800s because his remedies are still of great value.
Never finished.
This is a surprising book. I wish not to say very much about it--interfere with another reader's appreciation of it--except that it seemed different from the other of Dickens' works I have read (though it still shows his craftsmanship and mastery thereof); and that it is a good read.
Cannot ever tire of Mr. Dickens. Vintage Dickens...a small jewel...wish it were longer...but a jewel is still a jewel no matter the size.
The Battle of Life is a sweet love story. It is quite short, making for a nice casual read over a couple of days. I enjoyed it.
It was an OK story. I found it a bit fragmented like a chapter or two were missing
I've been reading as many of Dickens' lesser known books as I can find. This one is typical of the Dickens theme of self-sacrifice and happy endings in a fairly short story, with all ends tied up. The title and the setting (a former battlefield) are not really relevant to the theme, other than Marion's inner conflict
A beautifully written simple story about love . I found myself reading many sentences a second time because they so perfectly portrayed a scene or an emotion
