Pru Parke has her dream job head gardener at an eighteenth-century manor house in Sussex. The landscape for Primrose House was laid out in 1806 by renowned designer Humphry Repton in one of his meticulously illustrated Red Books, and the new owners want Pru to restore the estate to its former glory—quickly, as they’re planning to showcase it in less than a year at a summer party.

But life gets in the way of the best laid plans When not being happily distracted by the romantic attentions of the handsome Inspector Christopher Pearse, Pru is digging into the mystery of her own British roots. Still, she manages to make considerable progress on the vast grounds—until vandals wreak havoc on each of her projects. Then, to her horror, one of her workers is found murdered among the yews. The police have a suspect, but Pru is certain they’re wrong. Once again, Pru finds herself entangled in a thicket of evil intentions—and her, without a hatchet.

The Red Book of Primrose House A Potting Shed Mystery Potting Shed Mystery series 2 edition by Marty Wingate Mystery Thriller Suspense eBooks

I stumbled upon the "Potting Shed Mysteries" a couple of days ago and have been really captured by them. Having read both books in two days (I'm a fast reader and I didn't skim over or skip pages), I have really enjoyed the "cozy reads". Having reached the tender age of 72 and living in a place quite removed from my native San Diego where everything grew well with just a "glance and a nod", I am getting a "third person thrill" from these books.
No, these are not James Patterson, Nora Roberts, Catherine Coulter etc. mysteries, but they are nice break from the more blood and guts novels that are available today. So if you want a nice, charming, cozy read that will put a smile on your face and give your detective grey cells a tingle ...give these Potting Shed Mysteries a try.
As for me...I think I'll go "fix" dinner now.

The Red Book of Primrose House A Potting Shed Mystery Potting Shed Mystery series 2 edition by Marty Wingate Mystery Thriller Suspense eBooks Reviews

I was an early, pre-publication reader of this series and I couldn't wait to sit down and re-read "The Red Book of Primrose House" when it was recently released for my e-reader. Like Marty Wingate's first book in "The Potting Shed Mystery" series, this second adventure of Pru Parke is horticulturally perfect, full of intrigue, suspense, whodunnit puzzles and a lovely budding romance (spoiler alert!) with a handsome beau from Scotland Yard. I love traveling through England's famous gardens in the pages of The Red Book of Primrose House. Can't wait for Book #3~
Hatchets. Axes. Arrows and Knives -- good heavens. Couldn't put the book down. Loved this one more than the first book in the series. Who'd thought it was be so exciting in the country. Her employers are quirky. A wide array of suspects, I mean characters. So put on your thinking hat. Pru does have a way about her and she's kindhearted to people but are they who we think they are? I'd want Pru in my corner. And we still have the dashing Inspector. Can't wait for August when book three is released. Hope we hear wedding bells.
Enjoyable cozy mystery set in England. Pru Parke, an American gardener, is a believable middle-aged character but I found her frequent remarks about her gardening deadline annoying when she rarely seemed to be working in the garden. I know cozy amateur sleuths spend their time solving mysteries and their occupations are of secondary importance so pointing that out did not seem necessary. Minor criticism I know but I thought if the deadline was so important then the author should have portrayed her actually working in the garden rather than walking around thinking about the murder to be solved.
I find the English setting to be fun reading. The character in the gardener series is American, but living in England. The romance is charming, and sexual content is only suggested, and private, which I so appreciate. The mysteries in these books are interesting, and finding the perp is an adventure. I'm willing to read anything Wingate writes; the books are easy reads, but also captivating. The descriptions of the heroin's surroundings make me want to visit England again.
This book not only had a good mystery but a lot of heart. We learn more about Pru's family history. And with any family there is much joy and some heartache. The characters remain wonderful; the book is as much about the people as it is about the mystery. The pace was moderate, certainly faster than book one. I read this book in one sitting. I am looking forward to reading book 3.
A woman from Texas with English roots, takes a job to create a garden on an English estate, as a homage to the artistry of a famous landscape architect, who had done a plan for the estate. The plan need not be followed exactly, but should give off the same feel.

She is quite the lady, skilled, witty, smart, independent and works along with the crew. There is a romantic interest, stationed about an hour a way in London, and their occasional weekends are a treasure to both of them.

The book talks about gardening but also, secrets, jealousy, the uber rich, and what it would take to really make the grounds of an old estabe glow in that lovely English way.

A romance and murder and a fun read.
A good installment to this cozy mystery series. I still like Pru even if her seeming inability to have a plan for when things go pear shaped due to her nosiness, irritates me. I liked the growth of her relationship with Christopher & also the revelations she found on her continues quest for her English roots. I'm not sure why she displays not only no interest in her American father's line but seems almost apologetic over it but still, it was nice to see her explore her mother's family ties in her chosen heartland. The characters were fairly well done except for the actual murderer. That was pretty thin but alas it doesn't matter since they're our baddie. I thought Pru's employers, Davina & her husband (he was so absent a character that I didn't commit his name to memory) were interesting and understood how Pru's was both frustrated with them but also found them ultimately endearing. I very much enjoy this series though I'm not Pru's peer (I don't know why but I always picture Pru & Christopher as younger than they are in the books) or know a thing about gardening. I look forward to the next in the series.
